The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reacted to the recent fare slash for rail transport, admitting that the agency is yet to recover from previous transportation fare waivers by the government.
The President Bola Tinubu-led administration yesterday announced a 50 per cent waiver on road transport and a 100 per cent fare slash for rail transportation as part of moves to cushion the impact of the high cost of living in the country, especially during Yuletide.
But the Managing Director of the NRC, Fidet Okhiria while commending the development expressed concerns over the cost of the intervention scheme and hopes the government can defray the costs.
The cost of transportation skyrocketed in Nigeria owing to the removal of fuel subsidy in a country where the majority of the people use road transportation.
However, some passengers online have confirmed that the zero payment for rail transport has taken effect.
