The President of the senate, Godwill Apkabio has called for a reform of the electoral act, devaluation of power and recognition of the roles and importance of traditional rulers to set the nation on a path of true federalism and quality representation.
Akpabio speaking during a lecture, colloquium to mark his 61st birthday, stated that the current reality in Nigeria points at a review and re-examination of extant laws, which he said must capture the obtainable values and aspirations of Nigerians in this age.
The lawmaker stated further that the judiciary must be empowered to look beyond using the instrumentality of the law to seek gains and favors, putting them at the mercy of politicians, advocating a practicable solution to the immense corruption in the judicial system.
Akpabio however harped on the necessity to blur the lines of ethnicity and tribalism, to promote nationality and brotherhood over ethnic bigotry that has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation.
