Rivers state police command says preliminary investigation does not capture claims by some persons that officers of the force connived with thugs to attempt an assassination on a factional speaker of the state house of assembly, Edison Ehie, noting that such activity is alien to the force.
Commissioner of police Olatunji Disu said this during a visit to the home of the factional speaker, who alleged that men in police uniforms had attempted to forcefully gain access to his residence yesterday night, insisting that some of them were recognized police men.
However, in his response, Disu argued that he was not aware of such development, stating that he has made contact with leaders of different squad placed on patrol to get first-hand information, while assuring of adequate protection of all residents.
Earlier, police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the commissioner had invited the officers fingered in the incidence, saying that they will be interrogated in line with the conduct of the force.
Following the October 29 fire that razed the House of Assembly, Ehie was removed from his position as leader by lawmakers loyal to Martins Amaewhule, but retaliated and declared himself speaker, sparking a legislative crisis in the House.
