The Vice President, Kashim Shettima has told members of the National Assembly failure in Nigeria would equal failure of the African continent and therefore the responsibility lies on the current administration to ensure the country works.
Shettima who made the assertion as he declared open the National Assembly Retreat in Akwa-Ibom reminded the legislators that bills and motions must be driven by the desires of the people and societal realities.
“We are the representatives of our people, we are the representatives of the black men; that is the burden we carry. If Nigeria fails, the black man has failed, let us make Nigeria work,” Shettima maintained.
In his address, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio who aligned with the Vice President, said the current crop of legislators would efficiently undertake oversight and ensure checks on the operations of the executive.
The Retreat held at Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom is being attended by lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives and has former Presidents of the Senate including; Anyim Pius Anyim, David Mark, Ken Nnamani and Ahmed Lawan in attendance.
