Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo says the recent rise in cases of coup in Africa is an evident desire by young people for freedom and liberation.
Speaking at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasnajo said failure of leaders in different democratic setting has betrayed the trust of the youths, conditions he said encourages military takeovers.
He however called for the entrenchment of true democratic principles with God-given attributes as a way of discouraging coups in the continent.
Obasanjo also urged African youths to brace up and take leadership positions today and not tomorrow, by actively participating in decision making and contributing in policies that shapes the future.
In recent years, there have been seven coups across Africa, with the latest happening in Gabon on August 30. Niger, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Guinea, and Mali are all under military rule.
