Former US President, Donald Trump has requested that his trial on federal charges that he allegedly sought to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden be adjourned till April 2026.
The request made before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan would place the trial after the November 2024 U.S. election, in which Trump is the front-runner for the Republican nomination.
Trump’s lawyers argued that the date was decided as the public were interested in a fair trial and not a rush to judgement.
But U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith, whose office is prosecuting the federal 2020 election case against Trump, insists the trial should be scheduled for 2nd January, 2024 which is two weeks before the first votes are cast in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
